With freezing Russian air streaming in from the southeast there has already been lots of snow (8 Inches in some places). It looks like the snow will continue for the reset of the week, but may die down for a bit on Tuesday evening for most of England and Wales. On Thursday and Friday Snow will switch direction and start coming in from the North.

How long will it take?

Something I don't understand is, after years and years and years and years(I could go on... and I will) and years and years and years and years of tornadoes, how people are still managing to get killed? I know night time tornadoes cause a lot of deaths, so people killed by them have an excuse, but tornadoes during the day, when there are plenty of warnings given, people still manage to die? I think maybe one cause is people not having shelter, so why doesn't the government give away shelters free? You can't complain about cost you only need some reinforced metal fitted into an inside room to provide some basic protection, or how about communal shelters like in WWI and WWII? I also think more education should be given in schools and not just to children, to adults as well. But I guess no matter how much you give to help the stupid, it will never be enough and maybe if America ignores the problem it will sort itself out:

Death + Stupid People = No Stupid People.

Nothing much happened apart from some dark bands of clouds eventually going overcast before the rain, then it started to rain, so yeh pretty uneventful.

Also ESTOFEX and TORRO have issued tornado watches for basically the whole of the UK, so today might be interesting!

Weird weather today! And a tornado watch is from scotland to about 30-50 miles north of me. My younger cousin pointed out some nice clouds, so I grabbed my camera and took these:

And to save upload space, I stitched the rest of the photos together!

Here is a movie I also took, you can really hear the wind gust! The little kid you can also here is my cousin.

IRC Problems

Everyone on the severe studios IRC channel got sick of me so I got banned. I'm just gonna look at forecasts and stuff now and learn on my own.

Below is a doppler radar image from google earth. Red circles are where I think cells might develope. The black dashed line is which direction I think the clouds are moving.

Watched my first live chase!

I watched my first live storm chase at: www.severestudios.com/livechase

The person chasing was Steve Miller, at first I thought he would head towards the main cell developing in the Texas Panhandle, but He drove in the opposite direction. We agreed on IRC that he must know something that we don't.

After 1-2 hours of driving, 3 random cells developed out of no where. GR3 was reporting 4" hail, but it overestimates the size of hail all the time. The cells had very intense reflectivity and precipitation. The main cell also half merged with another cell, but they separated again.

I think that is either a wall cloud or a scud cloud, I don't know enough about chasing to tell the difference.

This image shows the high base, as well as the edge of the cell.

Here you can see me asking some noobish questions on irc. I don't think that was a tornado, just rain or a low cloud, since it didn't appear to be rotating, and there was no debris cloud.

Lastly here is my favourite image. Steve was under the cell, and the clouds had that twisting shape.

Hurricane Gustav

Last week I decided randomly to download some doppler radar software, and stumbled on GRLevel3. It is really good software and is worth buying.

So I thought I was tracking thunderstorms in Louisiana, but I hadn't heard of Hurricane Gustav. So the next day I opened up GRLevel3 and noticed what was happening.

Here are some images of the storm:

To get a better view I switched to long range reflectivity.

I recorded speeds of around 120-130mph, which made it a category 3.

But after it had spent some hours over land, it lost a lot of its shape:

The blue boxes are flood warnings, the red boxes are Tornado Warnings.

Welcome to my Storm Blog, I am only 15, so I can't go out and storm chase(yet). I will mainly be uploading interesting pictures, and writing about what I have learned. I might also put up some tutorials, but I need to understand the stuff first :P
